Manhattan Beach Sandpipers Host Back to School Shopping Event for 75 Kids

Sandpipers, South Bay’s largest philanthropic organization, recently hosted its annual Back-to-School Shopping event at Kohl’s in Torrance on August 11. This event, which has been held since 1999, aims to benefit over 75 underprivileged youth in the South Bay area. Each child is referred by one of twelve local nonprofit partner agencies of Sandpipers and is then paired with a member of the organization who helps them select school clothes, shoes, uniforms, and supplies valued at $250-$350 per child. In addition to these items, Sandpipers also donates backpacks filled with school supplies for each student.

Kohl’s plays a significant role in supporting this program by opening its doors before normal business hours, providing staffing for the event, and offering a 20 percent discount on Sandpipers’ purchases with no sales tax. This partnership allows Sandpipers to stretch their funds further and provide more for the children in need.

Dayna Bubenicek, the 2024-25 president of Sandpipers, emphasized the importance of the Back-to-School Shopping event. As a school teacher herself, she understands the impact that new clothes and supplies can have on a child’s confidence and self-esteem. By collaborating with Kohl’s and generous community donors, Sandpipers is able to empower deserving children who may have never received brand-new clothing or shoes before. This event not only helps children prepare for the school year but also gives them a sense of pride and confidence as they start a new academic year.

Bubenicek also highlighted how this event is a favorite among Sandpipers‘ members. It allows them to see the direct impact they are making on children in their community, which is a rewarding experience for all involved. The Back-to-School Shopping event is just one of the many philanthropic programs that Sandpipers organizes throughout the year.

Sandpipers, founded in 1931, is a volunteer organization dedicated to serving the needs of the South Bay community through charitable and philanthropic programs. With over 800 volunteer members, Sandpipers has raised and distributed more than $2.2 million dollars in the past five years to those most in need in the South Bay. Their various programs, including Emergency Casework, Holiday Baskets, College Scholarships, and Community Grants, aim to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families in the community.
