Explore upcoming home and garden events in New Orleans

The Pontchartrain Center in Kenner is gearing up to host a two-day Home Show on August 24-25, offering a plethora of information, demonstrations, and exhibits for both home and garden enthusiasts. This event promises to be a one-stop-shop for all things related to renovations, building, solar products, and more, with several local companies showcasing their latest offerings. Additionally, attendees can look forward to the Louisiana Food Fest by Langenstein’s, featuring samples, tastings, and recipes from over 20 brands of products, including new items from local companies.

Located at Williams Boulevard at Lake Pontchartrain, the Home Show will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. Tickets for this exciting event start at $8 and can be purchased on the jaaspro.com website. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your next home project or simply want to explore the latest trends in home and garden design, this event is not to be missed.

In addition to the Home Show, Longue Vue House and Gardens in New Orleans is celebrating World Honeybee Day with free garden admission for Louisiana residents on Saturday. Visitors can enjoy the beautifully landscaped grounds of this historic estate and take discounted tours of the home. For those interested in a hands-on experience, the Mom & Me Garden Workshop will be held at 2 p.m. in the Playhouse, where a horticulturist will lead a fun and educational activity using items from the gardens. Tickets for the workshop start at $75 and include all supplies and refreshments.

For those looking to delve into the history of their New Orleans property, a Zoom online course titled „Researching Your New Orleans Property“ will be offered on Saturday. Led by Robert J. Cangelosi Jr. of Tulane School of Architecture, this course will provide valuable insights into developing the history of a property using primary sources. Participants will learn about the importance of a „chain of title“ and how it documents ownership of the property, laying the foundation for a comprehensive property history.

The Friends of the Cabildo organization is also hosting a Fall Member Lecture Series, with a focus on New Orleans cemeteries. Cemetery scholar Emily Ford will lead discussions on various topics throughout August and September, including cemetery titles, property ownership, repair, preservation, and more. These lectures are free for members and $10 each for nonmembers, with the option to purchase a series pass for $25. The lectures will be held at 6 p.m. on Zoom, offering a convenient way to learn about the rich history of New Orleans cemeteries.

If you’re in the market for an older home and considering renovation, the Preservation Resource Center is offering a daylong class titled „Fixer Upper 101“ on September 13. This class combines the Buy Right and Renovate Right classes to help buyers evaluate, plan, and execute the purchase and renovation of an older home. From property evaluation to financing options and working with contractors, this class covers all aspects of buying and renovating an older home. Tickets for the class are $35 and can be purchased on the PRC’s website.

Lastly, City Park is offering volunteer opportunities for those interested in helping to maintain and improve the urban green space. From the Urban Forest Support Initiative to the Litter Abatement Campaign and the Big Lake Native Plant Trail Restoration Project, there are various ways to get involved and make a positive impact on the park. Interested individuals can register for these programs and find more information on the Friends of City Park website.

With a wide range of events and activities happening in and around New Orleans, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn from. Whether you’re a home improvement enthusiast, history buff, or nature lover, these upcoming events offer a unique opportunity to explore, engage, and contribute to the vibrant community of New Orleans.
