New parents launch mental health awareness campaign

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council has launched a campaign in South Yorkshire to raise awareness about perinatal mental illness and encourage individuals to seek support. Perinatal mental illness refers to mental health issues that occur during pregnancy and up to one year after the birth of a baby. According to NHS England, up to 27% of new and expectant mothers experience mental ill-health during this period, with up to one in five fathers also being impacted.

To help identify the signs and symptoms of perinatal mental illness, the council has collaborated with health and care professionals to create an animated video. This video, along with supporting campaign materials, will be displayed in Barnsley Hospital, community health settings, online platforms, and social media. The goal of the campaign is to encourage individuals to reach out for help when experiencing mental health challenges during the perinatal period.

Some common signs and symptoms of perinatal mental illness include feeling depressed, difficulty sleeping, uncontrollable worrying, irritability, struggles in connecting with the baby, and thoughts of self-harm or harm to others. It is essential for individuals experiencing these symptoms to seek professional support and guidance.

Councillor Wendy Cain, cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities at the council, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about perinatal mental health. She expressed gratitude to health professionals and everyone involved in the campaign for their efforts in breaking down barriers related to perinatal mental health. The council aims to provide expectant parents, new mothers and fathers, and their babies with the resources and support needed for healthier and happier lives.

For individuals seeking help and support with pregnancy-related issues, resources are available through the BBC Action Line. Additionally, individuals can listen to highlights from South Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North, or share stories that they believe should be covered by the media.

Overall, the campaign launched by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council serves as a vital initiative to raise awareness about perinatal mental illness and encourage individuals to seek help when needed. By providing information and support, the council aims to improve the mental health and well-being of expectant parents, new mothers and fathers, and their babies in the South Yorkshire community.
