Indian universities equip students for the evolving workforce

In today’s fast-paced world, industries are embracing technological advancements at an unprecedented rate, leading to the emergence of new fields and career opportunities. To keep up with these changes, universities worldwide are introducing unconventional degree programs designed to prepare students for cutting-edge careers. The higher education sector in India is also rapidly adapting to meet the demands of the ever-evolving job market, with many institutions pioneering unconventional disciplines to better align with new career opportunities and changing demands.

The government of India has taken a significant step towards transforming the country’s education system by introducing the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) in July 2020. This landmark initiative aims to overhaul the education system and make it more inclusive, flexible, and aligned with 21st-century requirements. One of the key objectives of NEP 2020 is to focus on interdisciplinary studies, vocational education, and technological integration, among other reforms. Four years on, it is essential to assess how these policy changes are being translated into practice and how they are influencing the overall direction of India’s higher education sector.

Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, the Principal Director of Symbiosis Society and Pro-Chancellor of Symbiosis International University, Pune, believes that the new education policy rolled out in 2020 is focused on building a globally competent human resource. She highlights how Indian higher education has evolved from its traditional roots to a system that now caters to 21st-century needs. Dr. Yeravdekar points out that the Indian higher education system has become robust and large, driven by the needs of the modern era, with some institutions being ranked as world-class universities. She emphasizes the shift from massification of education to a focus on skilling, employability, and entrepreneurial capabilities.

Sandra Vaz, Joint Course Head of Journalism & Mass Communication at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, stresses the importance of critical thinking and problem-solving skills in today’s job market. She notes that professional courses in higher education have emphasized cognitive thinking and its application in designing user-friendly processes. Vaz mentions that new programs have been introduced to cater to industry demands, seamlessly blending with existing modules of learning or being introduced as entirely new programs.

NEP 2020 encourages interdisciplinary studies and the introduction of new subjects in higher education. Dr. Yeravdekar believes that unconventional disciplines have become essential for ensuring employability in today’s job market. She mentions how Symbiosis International University has started courses in culinary arts, visual arts, photography, and an MBA in Innovation and Entrepreneurship to meet the demands of the industry. Vaz emphasizes the importance of programs focusing on soft skills and personal development to prepare students for the corporate world, especially in light of the challenges posed by the pandemic and online schooling.

As digital advancements continue to impact various industries, Vaz highlights the significance of technological advancements in media education. She mentions how artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality, and virtual reality have enhanced the creation, execution, and delivery of media collateral, enabling quicker and dynamic operations in communication information presentation and distribution.

Despite the rise of unconventional disciplines, both experts agree on the continued importance of liberal arts education. Dr. Yeravdekar emphasizes that liberal arts provide a broad foundation for holistic development, enabling students to gain a strong base of knowledge and develop citizenship qualities. Vaz supports this view, highlighting the role of liberal arts in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enabling students to engage with broader societal issues and stand out in a competitive job market.

In conclusion, India’s higher education system is undergoing a significant transformation, with leading institutions nationwide implementing new programs and integrating technological advancements while upholding the importance of a well-rounded education. As India adapts to the evolving job market, this robust foundation is set to equip students to thrive in a dynamic and rapidly changing world. The focus on interdisciplinary studies, vocational education, and technological integration is paving the way for a more inclusive and flexible higher education system that meets the demands of the 21st century.
