Car found in Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River during search for driver – NBC10 Philadelphia

In the early hours of Friday, a dramatic scene unfolded along Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River as a car plunged into the water near the Girard Avenue Bridge. Despite the efforts of witnesses and emergency crews, the driver of the vehicle was nowhere to be found, leaving behind a mystery that authorities are working to unravel.

The incident was first reported around 3:45 a.m. on August 16, 2024, when fisherman Anthony Manduzio witnessed a car suddenly reversing at high speed through a rope barrier and into the river. Manduzio immediately sprang into action, attempting to flag down passing drivers for help and calling 911. He even ventured partially into the water in a brave effort to assist, but the car quickly floated from one side of the bridge to the other before disappearing beneath the surface.

As the sun rose, the Philadelphia Police Marine Unit Dive Team arrived on the scene to conduct a search for the submerged vehicle. The murky waters of the Schuylkill River presented a challenge for divers, but after a thorough effort, the car was located approximately 25 to 30 feet below the surface. Despite this discovery, the situation took a puzzling turn as no driver or passengers were found inside the vehicle.

Lt. Shaun Butts of the Philadelphia Police addressed the media, explaining that the car’s doors were locked, making it difficult for divers to see inside. A wrecker would be required to retrieve the car from the water, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation. The circumstances surrounding the car’s plunge into the river remained unclear, prompting speculation about whether the incident was accidental or intentional.

Lt. Andrew Napoli of the Philadelphia Police Marine Unit expressed bewilderment at the situation, noting the significant distance the car had traveled from the road before entering the water. With no immediate answers in sight, authorities continued their efforts to piece together the events leading up to the mysterious incident.

The unfolding story captured the attention of the public, with many eager for updates on the investigation. As details emerged and the search for the missing driver continued, the community remained on edge, hoping for a resolution to the puzzling events that had unfolded along the Schuylkill River.

As the investigation progressed, authorities worked tirelessly to uncover the truth behind the car’s plunge into the river and the whereabouts of its driver. With each new development, the mystery deepened, leaving a lingering sense of unease in its wake. The story of the submerged car on that fateful morning would remain etched in the memories of those who witnessed the dramatic events along Philadelphia’s waterfront.
