Australia is Connected to the World by Just 15 Internet Cables: ScienceAlert

The Australian government’s recent announcement of a A$18 million investment in the Cable Connectivity and Resilience Centre highlights the critical importance of protecting the undersea cables that power the nation’s internet. These cables are the backbone of the internet, enabling everything from social media updates to global economic transactions. With the internet contributing over $167 billion annually to the Australian economy, safeguarding these cables is essential.

Undersea telecommunications cables have a long history, dating back to the mid-19th century when the British Empire invested in them to connect and control its distant territories. These cables, which are typically no wider than a garden hose, can transmit data at speeds of up to 300 terabits per second. Currently, there are approximately 1.4 million kilometers of submarine cables in service globally, with only 15 known international cables managing 99% of Australia’s data traffic.

The new Cable Connectivity and Resilience Centre will play a crucial role in protecting these vital undersea cables from threats such as accidental damage and malicious attacks. By providing technical assistance and training across the Indo-Pacific region, the centre aims to support other governments in developing better policies regarding undersea cables. Australia’s commitment to protecting undersea cables is further demonstrated by its membership in the International Cable Protection Committee and the establishment of protection zones and regulations for undersea cables.

The increasing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) and the growing competition between the United States and China for technological dominance underscore the urgent need for robust data protection, including the security of undersea cables. The new centre not only addresses economic concerns but also plays a crucial role in national security, positioning Australia as a key digital security provider in the region.

However, the specialized nature of undersea cable technology requires a nuanced approach. Collaboration with private sector experts experienced in manufacturing, laying, and monitoring cables is essential for addressing physical and digital vulnerabilities. Additionally, balancing national interests with industry control is crucial to avoid power concentration, especially as tech giants like Google and Amazon play a significant role in the cable industry.

The establishment of the Cable Connectivity and Resilience Centre represents a shift in Australia’s approach to digital infrastructure security, moving towards a more diplomatic stance. This transition reflects Australia’s intent to mitigate China’s influence over subsea infrastructure while balancing national security with diplomatic engagement. Engaging with international partners beyond the Quad partnership will further bolster Australia’s digital infrastructure resilience.

In conclusion, the newly announced Cable Connectivity and Resilience Centre marks a significant step forward in Australia’s efforts to protect its undersea cables and navigate the complex global technological landscape. By adopting a diplomatic approach and fostering collaboration with industry experts and international partners, Australia is poised to enhance the security and resilience of its digital infrastructure for years to come.
