Murph and I are back on the trail, feeling refreshed and excited for the journey ahead in northern Vermont. After a nice shower and shave at The Yellow Deli, we are ready to tackle the next leg of our adventure. Murph, who had already hiked the previous 105 miles, is eager to explore new terrain in Vermont.
As we hit the Maine Junction at Willard Gap, I feel a sense of anticipation and excitement. It’s like starting a whole new journey as we head in a different direction from the Appalachian Trail hikers. The prospect of exploring the peaks of Vermont motivates me, and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead.
The trail changes quickly after the Maine Junction, becoming narrower with more blowdowns. We encounter fewer hikers and enjoy the solitude of the trail. Along the way, we meet fellow Long Trail hikers, Superfeet & Carrots, who share their plans to attend a memorial service off-trail.
After a challenging day of climbing, we reach Sunrise shelter and settle in for the night. We are joined by a family from New Jersey, adding a touch of familiarity to our journey. The dad impresses us with his bear hang skills, and we enjoy a night of laughter and camaraderie.
The next day brings unexpected emotional challenges for me, but a moment of clarity at Middlebury Snowbowl helps me regain my focus and enthusiasm for the trail. As we near the halfway point, I feel a sense of accomplishment and peace within myself.
Our plans take a turn as we decide to hike to Waitsfield instead of Waterbury, with a stop at Skyline Lodge along the way. The lodge offers a cozy retreat, and we enjoy a relaxing evening in the mountains.
The following day, we hike through clouds and rain, with a comical bathroom break along the trail. Despite the challenges, the beauty of the landscape and the support of my hiking partner keep me going.
In Warren, Vermont, we enjoy delicious food at Mad Tacos and Canteen, savoring the flavors of the town. A quirky encounter at a pizza shop adds a touch of humor to our day.
A phone call from Cool Trail Mom brings unexpected news of her decision to leave the trail. We offer her support and encouragement, and she decides to join us at Hostel Tevere for the night. Our impromptu family dinner brings us closer together, and we look forward to the adventures that await us on the trail.
As we head to bed, uncertain of what tomorrow will bring, we are grateful for the camaraderie and support of our fellow hikers. The trail may be unpredictable, but with good company by our side, we are ready to face whatever challenges come our way.
