Property in Southern England: Seventies House in Winchester

The Seventies House in Winchester, Southern England, is a stunning property that has been transformed by the talented architects at AR Design Studio. Originally owned by the head of the local horticultural society, the house was surrounded by a lush garden filled with mature trees and dense shrubs. However, after being left unoccupied for three years, the house fell into disrepair and the garden became overgrown. AR Design Studio was tasked with restoring the house and garden back to their former glory, as well as adding a contemporary extension to the rear of the property.

The new extension complements the existing mid-century aesthetic of the house while offering a modern touch. A long, asymmetric mass extends across the northern facade, with a timber canopy stretching out to provide shade and protection from the elements. The extension features a large open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area, perfect for everyday family living and hosting gatherings. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors wrap around the extension, allowing for unobstructed views of the garden and creating a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors.

Inside, the design is clean and minimalist, with a neutral color palette that allows the garden views to take center stage. White pocket doors can be used to partition off the kitchen and living area for privacy or opened up to let light flood through the space. The furniture in the living area nods to the mid-century aesthetic present throughout the rest of the house, creating a cohesive and stylish look.

The bathrooms in the Seventies House feature a contemporary interpretation of the mid-century style, with a strong color palette that reflects the character of the original home. The garden has been carefully restored, with new planting introduced to refresh the landscape and create a seamless connection between the extension and the outdoor space.

The property information for the Seventies House includes details about the architecture, contractor, structural engineer, and materials used in the project. The photography by Martin Gardner beautifully captures the transformation of the house and garden by AR Design Studio.

Overall, the Seventies House in Winchester, Southern England, is a stunning example of how a thoughtful contemporary extension can enhance the character of a mid-century home. The careful restoration of the house and garden, along with the addition of the modern extension, has created a private and tranquil retreat for the family to enjoy for years to come.
