The Rochelle Elementary School District Board of Education recently received an update on the ongoing facility work being done within the district. Kevin Dale, the District Business Manager, provided a recap of the recent projects that have been completed at various district facilities. These projects included expanding the parking lot at Tilton Elementary School, removing asbestos tiles in hallways and classrooms at Tilton, and completing a geothermal borefield project. These improvements are part of a larger effort to enhance the safety and functionality of the district’s buildings.
One significant project that the board approved in June was the issuance of general obligation school bonds totaling $11,163,432 for renovations at Tilton Elementary School. This decision came after a health life safety evaluation revealed that approximately $7.9 million worth of work was needed at the school to address safety concerns. The district is also utilizing funds from its reserves to cover additional improvements, such as security enhancements and spatial upgrades. The renovations at Tilton School are part of a three-year plan that aims to address these issues comprehensively.
Looking ahead, the district is in the process of starting concept design work for future renovation projects at Tilton School. This involves collaborating with architects to develop plans for additional improvements and enhancements at the school. The long-term goal is to complete the renovations by the summer of 2026, in time for the 2026-2027 school year. These renovations will include new construction to expand the school’s facilities and address various needs, such as additional classrooms, a multi-purpose room, a gym, a library, and more.
In addition to the work at Tilton School, other schools in the district have also undergone improvements. Rochelle Middle School received a furniture overhaul this summer, with new furniture and cafeteria tables being installed in classrooms. Lincoln, Central, and May School are currently undergoing their 10-year health life safety assessments to identify any necessary upgrades. The district is committed to ensuring that all its facilities meet the necessary safety and functionality standards for students and staff.
The board also approved a new four-year collective bargaining agreement with the Rochelle Elementary Education Association. This agreement includes a four-percent increase in teacher base pay each year, as well as provisions for increased teacher input on district committees and opportunities for professional development. The agreement reflects a collaborative effort between the district and the teachers‘ union to support the needs of students and educators.
Furthermore, the board approved an increase in substitute teacher pay from $105 to $120 per day, aligning with the state’s minimum wage increase to $15 per hour. This adjustment aims to attract and retain qualified substitute teachers to support the district’s staffing needs. Additionally, the upcoming fiscal year’s budget is expected to be in the black by approximately $100,000, pending final figures and approval at the September meeting.
