Review of ‚Black Butterflies‘ by Priscilla Morris

Priscilla Morris’s debut novel, „Black Butterflies,“ takes readers on a poignant journey through the harrowing first year of the siege of Sarajevo in 1992. The story follows Zora, a celebrated artist in Yugoslavia, who finds herself grappling with personal and professional challenges amidst the chaos of war. As the city is torn apart by conflict, Zora’s resilience and determination to hold onto her art become a beacon of hope in the darkness.

One of the most striking aspects of Morris’s novel is her vivid portrayal of Sarajevo as a city on the brink of destruction. Through her evocative descriptions, readers are transported to the cobbled streets, the grand old buildings, and the bustling markets of the city. The sense of place is so palpable that one can almost feel the tension in the air as neighbors come together to survive in the face of adversity.

As Zora navigates the challenges of daily life under siege, Morris skillfully weaves a narrative that is both heartbreaking and hopeful. The author’s attention to detail in depicting the struggles of the people trapped within the city walls adds a layer of authenticity to the story. From the scarcity of basic necessities like water and power to the constant threat of violence, every aspect of life in Sarajevo during the war is portrayed with raw emotion and honesty.

Despite the darkness that pervades the novel, there is a glimmer of light in Zora’s unwavering commitment to her art. As she uses whatever materials she can find to continue creating, her resilience becomes a symbol of defiance against the forces that seek to destroy her city. Through her art, Zora finds a way to transform her suffering into a source of strength, echoing the sentiments of Ismail Kadare on the power of literature in times of war.

„Black Butterflies“ is a powerful and moving exploration of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable hardship. Priscilla Morris’s poignant storytelling and vivid imagery make this novel a must-read for anyone interested in the transformative power of art and the resilience of the human soul.
