Acura has announced a voluntary recall of approximately 5,000 ZDX all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles in the U.S. due to a software issue that can cause a loss of braking below 25 mph. The affected vehicles include the 2024 ZDX A-Spec AWD and 2024 ZDX Type S models. This issue can occur when applying the brakes on a flat, smooth, dry surface at low speeds, where the vehicle may experience overly sensitive anti-lock braking system (ABS) control. If the ABS falsely activates and a specific sequence of wheel movements occur, the ABS system may continue to release braking pressure, potentially reducing stopping performance or causing the brakes to become inoperable, increasing the risk of a crash.
To address this issue, Acura will provide a free over-the-air software update for all affected vehicles. Owners will receive a notification on the center touchscreen prompting them to install the update after driving the vehicle and shifting to Park. Alternatively, owners can choose to install the update later by navigating to Settings, then Updates & History. It is important to note that the vehicle must already be enrolled in OnStar, and all required terms and conditions must be accepted to receive the over-the-air update.
During the update process, which may take up to 5 minutes, the vehicle will not be operable, and certain features like door locks, windows, and warning chimes may not work. If owners require assistance with the update, they can visit their Acura dealer to have the software update performed.
Acura is urging owners of affected vehicles to install the over-the-air update as soon as their vehicle prompts them to do so. The update will be sent to all vehicles today, and owners who have not yet updated their vehicles will receive a mailed notification in September. Owners can also check if their vehicles require repair by visiting http://www.recalls.acura.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.
It is important to note that no related crashes or injuries in Acura vehicles have been reported due to this software issue. The recall only applies to AWD vehicles, specifically the 2024 ZDX A-Spec AWD and 2024 ZDX Type S models. Acura is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of its customers by providing this free software update to address the braking issue in the affected vehicles.
