Advancing Community Resilience through Biogas Technology

Biogas technology is revolutionizing the way people in the villages of Zambia live their daily lives. This innovative technology has the potential to positively impact the environment, economy, and overall well-being of the community. One such beneficiary of this technology is Jane Akamandisa, who shared, “We have benefited a lot because we no longer use charcoal and firewood to prepare our meals but instead use gas for cooking and lighting; in addition, we use the bio-slurry as fertilizer in our garden.”

A biogas plant, also known as a biodigester, is the heart of this technology. It resembles a concrete dome built underground, where farmers can fill it with animal dung and organic household waste. Through a process called biodigestion, the biodigester generates gas that can be used for cooking and lighting. Additionally, the by-product of biodigestion, known as bio-slurry, can be utilized as organic fertilizer, further enhancing the benefits of this technology.

Kalimba Muzaza shared his experience with the project, stating, “This project improved our lives. PIN connected us with a bank to obtain loans to help implement the project. Furthermore, this project is a great financial investment and cost-effective way of farming.” People in Need (PIN) has been instrumental in implementing this project, having built 45 biodigesters so far with the goal of constructing 130 in Zambia, particularly in the Mongu, Nalolo, and Kalabo districts of Western Province. These biodigesters play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by reducing the need to cut down trees for fuel.

The project, which began in 2021, is funded and implemented by the Czech Development Agency in collaboration with partners like Keepers Zambia Foundation and the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. The District Administration and Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Livestock have also provided technical and financial support to the community on the usage of biogas technology. This collaborative effort aims to promote the protection and management of Zambia’s environmental and natural resources while fostering sustainable economic growth and improving the overall quality of life for the Zambian population.

Overall, biogas technology has the potential to transform the lives of people in Zambia by providing a sustainable energy source, reducing environmental impact, and promoting economic development. With the support of various organizations and government agencies, the widespread adoption of biogas technology could lead to a brighter and more sustainable future for the communities in Zambia.
