LepakConversations is a group that has been making waves in the advocacy scene, with its unique approach to addressing important issues such as cultural appropriation and mental health of racial minorities. One of its team members, Mr Naufal Zahin Azmi, a civil servant, joined the group as a researcher in June. He was drawn to the group’s „bite-size“ and „palatable“ approach to advocacy, which focuses on meaningful conversations and dialogues rather than big, visible actions.
Mr Naufal had previously held the misconception that advocacy was all about demonstrations and protests. However, after attending a few hour-long live chats organized by LepakConversations, he realized the power of honest conversations in bringing about change. The group’s first physical event, titled Kemelayuan: What Does It Mean To Be Malay Today, sold out within two days, highlighting the demand for meaningful dialogues in the community.
LepakConversations‘ growth over the past five years can be attributed to the changing preferences of a community that is increasingly distanced spatio-temporally, as well as the necessity to adapt to the limitations of traditional advocacy methods in a city setting. The group’s shift to online dialogues during the Covid-19 pandemic further emphasized the importance of technology in reaching a wider audience.
Ms Fezhah Maznan, a volunteer with LepakConversations, was drawn to the group’s Gen Z-run nature and its advocacy for migrant workers. She emphasizes that the impact of the group’s work is not measured by likes on social media posts, but by how it resonates with personal values and concerns.
Mr Naufal addresses skepticism about the group’s activities, noting that constructive complaining can lead to deeper discussions and solutions. He invites naysayers to engage with the group, understand their perspectives, and join them in their mission to create a more equitable and sustainable world.
In conclusion, LepakConversations‘ approach to advocacy through meaningful dialogues and engagement with communities has proven to be effective in addressing important issues and creating positive change. By fostering genuine connections and understanding, the group is paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable society.
