Alien Video Games: A Retrospective of Their History

1979’s Alien, written by Dan O’Bannon and directed by Sir Ridley Scott, is a sci-fi masterpiece that needs little introduction. A blend of science fiction and horror, Alien is considered one of the most influential films in both genres. The success of the film led to the creation of a multimedia franchise that included video games based on the Alien universe.

The history of Alien video games dates back over 40 years, with the first game, Alien for the Atari 2600, released in 1982. Despite technical limitations, the game was a milestone as one of the earliest video games based on an official movie license. However, it was criticized for being a Pac-Man clone with limited gameplay mechanics.

In 1984, Concept Software developed a more faithful interactive interpretation of the Alien movie for the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. This menu-driven strategy game required players to command the crew of the Nostromo as they navigated through the events of the film. The game was praised for its unique approach compared to other movie tie-in games of the time.

The Alien video game franchise continued with releases like Aliens: The Computer Game in 1986, which featured different versions for the US and European markets. The UK version, developed by Electric Dreams, introduced innovative gameplay mechanics and a first-person experience that captured the suspense and fear of the Alien universe.

In 1990, Konami released Aliens, an arcade side-scrolling shooter that became a hit among fans of the franchise. The game featured new Alien types and intense action sequences inspired by the film. It was followed by other arcade games like Aliens: The Gun in 1993, which offered a different take on the Alien universe.

The Alien video game series expanded with titles like Aliens Versus Predator for PC in 1999 and its sequel in 2001. These games allowed players to experience the conflict between Aliens, Predators, and Colonial Marines in immersive first-person shooter gameplay. The series continued with Aliens: Colonial Marines in 2013, which received mixed reviews for its departure from the source material.

In 2014, Alien: Isolation was released, offering a survival horror experience set in the Alien universe. The game focused on stealth and evasion, capturing the tense atmosphere of the original film. With its attention to detail and authentic portrayal of the Alien world, Alien: Isolation was praised as a high-quality licensed game.

Recent additions to the Alien video game franchise include Aliens: Fireteam Elite in 2021, a cooperative third-person shooter, and Aliens: Dark Descent in 2023, a unique blend of isometric RTS and survival horror elements. The franchise continues to evolve with new releases like Alien: Rogue Incursion, a VR action-horror game set for release in 2024.

Overall, the Alien video game franchise has seen its ups and downs over the years, with some titles capturing the essence of the films while others falling short of expectations. Despite the challenges, the Alien universe remains a popular and enduring source of inspiration for video game developers, offering fans new ways to experience the iconic sci-fi horror world created by Dan O’Bannon and Ridley Scott.
