Critter Rescue SA, a non-profit organization dedicated to caring for abandoned and abused small animals, has once again embarked on their annual Christmas Bucket campaign. This year, they have expanded their reach by adding an 11th charity to the campaign, bringing the total number of buckets needed to 75. The goal is to feed around 3,000 animals over the festive season, with each bucket capable of feeding 40 dogs.
Founded in 2018 by Karien van Wyk, Critter Rescue SA focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming various critters such as rats, bunnies, hedgehogs, and more. The organization also provides care for cats, dogs, and birds when needed. Currently, they are caring for hundreds of animals, some of which require long-term care due to old age or specific health issues.
The Christmas Bucket project, now in its 6th year, aims to provide food for dogs in need from various shelters and outreach programs. Each bucket is filled with enough food to feed 40 dogs and is delivered to the designated organizations. This year, the team at Critter Rescue SA has started collecting buckets early to ensure they reach their goal of supporting 11 different charities.
The organizations that will benefit from the Christmas Bucket campaign in 2024 include SPOT – Sunny’s Pet Outreach Team NPC, Thaba Tshwane Dogs, Paws R Us: SA, Maltese, French Poodle & Yorkie Rescue South Africa, Border Collie Rescue SA, Husky Heaven Rescue – NPC 2014/153344/08, Friends Of Rottweiler Rescue, Tiny Paws Rescue SA, The Animal Guardians – TAG, CLAW (Community-Led Animal Welfare), and PETS JHB – Pet Empowerment in Townships.
