Anita Werner and Michał Kołodziejczyk have teamed up once again to release their second book with a similar theme, marking their first collaboration in four years. The duo, known for their thought-provoking works, have decided to continue along the same lines of thinking, promising readers an engaging and insightful read. In a recent interview on TVN24, a journalist shared, „We decided to continue this same line of thinking, and I believe that anyone who has read the book ‚A Match is a Pretext: Football, War, Politics‘ will also find this new book to be an interesting read.“
The upcoming book, titled „Hope FC: Football, People, Politics,“ features four compelling reportages from four different corners of the world – Brazil, Turkey, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Readers can expect to delve into the tragic story of the Chapecoense football club, the struggles of African youth with albinism, and the footballing aspect of the Hutu-Tutsi rivalry.
Michał Kołodziejczyk shared an intriguing backstory behind one of the reportages, stating, „In 2020, I contacted a man who described the issue of genocide in Rwanda. Not only did he reply to me, but three years later, after the end of the pandemic, our journey came to fruition.“ He went on to recount the harrowing tale of a Rwandan national team goalkeeper, a Tutsi who was hidden by his Hutu teammates in basements and homes during the genocide. This poignant narrative sheds light on the atrocities that occurred during that dark period in Rwanda’s history.
Anita Werner emphasized the profound impact football has on people’s lives, stating, „When you go to the stadium, just look around. See where it’s located, what its history is. Listen to what people are talking about. Consider where and why there are tensions between them to tell a story much more interesting and complex than what happens on the field. It’s important to understand how football influences people.“
Michał Kołodziejczyk added to this sentiment by highlighting the significance of the stadium as a platform for freedom of expression, noting, „Every week there is a demonstration. There is no need to ask for permission for a march or gathering. There is freedom in the stands, where pluralism reigns.“
The book „Hope FC: Football, People, Politics“ by Anita Werner and Michał Kołodziejczyk is set to be released on October 23rd, offering readers a deep dive into the intertwining worlds of football, humanity, and politics. With their unique storytelling approach and dedication to shedding light on impactful narratives, the duo promises a compelling and thought-provoking read for all.
