Authorities in Bangladesh struggle to restore law and order amidst ongoing chaos

The recent political turmoil in Bangladesh has led to chaos and unrest in the country, with the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on Monday. In the absence of police presence to maintain law and order, students and volunteers have stepped up to manage traffic and ensure public safety. This unprecedented situation has prompted top police officials to call on all members of the police force to gradually resume their duties and restore order in the country.

The students, including members of Bangladesh Scouts, have been seen controlling traffic at various locations, taking on the responsibility of maintaining order in the absence of the police. Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) A K M Shahidur Rahman, who has been appointed as the focal person to handle the crisis, emphasized the importance of the police force in maintaining public safety and urged them to return to their duties to ensure security arrangements are in place.

Reports of attacks on police stations and facilities across the country have resulted in numerous police casualties, further exacerbating the situation. In response, the authorities have reconstituted the top positions of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to address the ongoing crisis. The reshuffle comes amidst the appointment of Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus as the head of an interim government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

Businesses in Bangladesh have expressed concerns over the unrest and vandalism, demanding immediate restoration of law and order to ensure the safety of their production units. The International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICC-B) highlighted the challenges faced by businesses, particularly garment units, in operating amid the ongoing turmoil.

In addition to the impact on businesses, the unrest has also affected the banking sector, with several top officials of Bangladesh Bank resigning amidst the chaos. Reports of violence against minorities have also surfaced, including the vandalism and destruction at popular folk band Joler Gaan’s frontman Rahul Ananda’s residence. The mob reportedly ransacked the house, taking valuables and torching the property, including over 3,000 musical instruments belonging to the musician.

The escalating violence and unrest in Bangladesh have raised concerns about the safety and security of the population. As the country grapples with the aftermath of political upheaval, it is essential for authorities to restore law and order to protect the well-being of citizens and ensure stability in the nation.
