Authorities in Bangladesh struggle to restore law and order as chaos persists – ThePrint – PTIFeed

The recent political turmoil in Bangladesh has led to chaos and unrest in the country, with the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on Monday. The absence of police officers from their duties has resulted in a breakdown of law and order, prompting students and volunteers to step in and manage traffic in the absence of law enforcement.

According to local media reports, Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) A K M Shahidur Rahman has been appointed as the focal person to handle the current crisis. He has called on every member of the police force to gradually resume their duties and ensure public safety and law and order are maintained.

In the absence of police presence, students and members of the Bangladesh Scouts have taken it upon themselves to control traffic at various locations in the city. However, the situation remains tense with reports of attacks on police stations and facilities across the country, resulting in numerous police casualties.

To address the escalating situation, the authorities have reconstituted the top positions of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). AKM Shahidur Rahman has been appointed as the Director General of RAB, while Md Mainul Hasan will replace Habibur Rahman as the commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The reshuffle comes in the wake of President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointing Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus as the head of an interim government. The unrest has also led to the resignation of several top officials, including Attorney General Advocate Abu Mohammad Amin Uddin and six officials of Bangladesh Bank, including Deputy Governor Kazi Sayedur Rahman.

Businesses in the country have demanded the immediate restoration of law and order to ensure the safety of their production units, particularly in light of arson attacks on factories over the past two days. The International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICC-B) has expressed concerns over the impact of the unrest on business operations.

The ongoing protests, which initially began over a quota system in government jobs, have escalated into widespread violence and unrest. Reports of attacks on minorities and prominent individuals have surfaced, highlighting the need for swift action to restore peace and stability in the country.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for all stakeholders to work together to address the underlying issues and restore calm in Bangladesh. The role of law enforcement agencies, government officials, and civil society groups will be crucial in navigating through this challenging period and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
