Avion Shopping, located in Umeå, is undergoing a significant expansion of 12,000 square meters to meet the growing needs of the local population and the city’s rapid development. The project, led by Ingka Centres, aims to create a vibrant and sustainable meeting place with a focus on providing positive experiences for visitors. With an estimated cost of 350 million kronor, the expansion is expected to be completed by the fall of 2025.
The decision to expand Avion Shopping comes in response to Umeå’s fast-paced growth and the evolving needs of its residents. The city is projected to have over 200,000 inhabitants by 2050, with the Teg area, adjacent to Avion, currently seeing the construction of 4,000 new apartments. The expansion will complement Avion’s existing offerings and experiences, attracting an additional one million visitors on top of the 4.2 million already visiting annually.
Lars Wild-Nordlund, Operations Manager Nordic at Ingka Centres, expressed excitement about Avion Shopping’s growth, emphasizing the importance of being locally relevant to meet visitors‘ needs and desires. The goal is to transform Avion into a bustling hub where people can shop, dine, and have fun together, while also supporting local businesses and giving back to the community.
Several well-known brands, including Coop, Rusta, and Candyworld, have already committed to joining the expansion, along with an expansion of Systembolaget. These additions will enhance the shopping experience and cater to the diverse needs of the local population. Mia Eskilsson, Meeting Place Manager at Avion Shopping, highlighted the strong interest from the market and the positive impact the new establishments will have on Umeå’s residents.
In line with Ingka Centres‘ global sustainability strategy, the expansion of Avion Shopping will prioritize eco-friendly solutions and practices. The project will adhere to the BREEAM Excellent standard, incorporating efficient waste management and sustainable building materials. An ecological study conducted by experts will ensure that the project enhances biodiversity through features like meadow vegetation, insect hotels, and birdhouses.
Furthermore, the expansion will leverage Avion’s existing sustainable energy solutions, such as 100% fossil-free electricity and geothermal heating and cooling systems. These initiatives align with the commitment to reduce environmental impact and promote a greener future for Avion Shopping and the surrounding community.
Overall, the expansion of Avion Shopping represents a significant investment in Umeå’s future, creating a dynamic and environmentally conscious destination for residents and visitors alike. With a focus on sustainability, innovation, and community engagement, Avion Shopping is poised to become a premier shopping and leisure destination in the region.
