Baidu, the leading search engine in China, is facing a challenging market landscape as it navigates through an AI price war and a decline in quarterly revenue. Despite these obstacles, the company remains confident in its position as a frontrunner in AI technology in China.
The CEO of Baidu, Robin Li, emphasized the fierce competition in the AI market over the next few years during an earnings call following the release of the company’s Q2 results. Baidu’s Ernie platform, which handles over 600 million requests daily, is claimed to be the highest among Chinese companies, showcasing the company’s strong foothold in the AI sector.
While Baidu’s revenue for the quarter ending in June saw a slight decline of 0.4% to 33.93 billion yuan, the company’s focus on AI investment as part of its transformation into an „AI company“ remains steadfast. The drop in revenue was attributed to a slowing Chinese economy recovering from a property market slump, leading advertisers to tighten their budgets.
Baidu’s large language model platform, Ernie, has been integrated into various app services to enhance user experience. The company has also introduced a paid version of its Ernie-powered chatbot for public use and offers API services powered by Ernie to developers through its cloud computing offerings. Generative AI, which contributed 9% to Baidu’s cloud computing revenue in Q2, is on the rise, indicating the company’s commitment to AI innovation.
In addition to its AI endeavors, Baidu has ramped up investment in autonomous vehicles, with its Apollo Go robotaxis operating in multiple Chinese cities. The company’s Apollo Go operations in Wuhan, boasting the largest fleet of 500 vehicles, are expected to reach break-even by the end of the year, despite not yet significantly contributing to revenue.
Although adjusted net income fell by 8% to 7.4 billion yuan, it surpassed analysts‘ expectations. U.S.-listed shares of Baidu experienced a 3.3% decline in early trading, reflecting the market’s response to the company’s quarterly performance.
As Baidu continues to navigate the competitive AI landscape in China, its strategic investments in AI technology, autonomous vehicles, and cloud computing position the company for long-term growth and success.
