Beyond Housing recently organized a community clean-up day in Dormanstown, Redcar, with the support of various local groups and organizations. The event aimed to enhance the local environment and provide valuable services for the community. Volunteers participated in activities such as garden cleaning and waste disposal, with assistance from the Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council Recycling Team and the Cleveland Fire Brigade.
One of the highlights of the event was the collaboration with partner organizations, which added significant value. The England Illegal Money Lending Team raised awareness about loan shark issues, while Dormanstown Primary School engaged with the community under the leadership of new Head Teacher Antje Kell. Business in the Community supported climate change action, and the Greggs Foundation provided sweet treats to families while discussing the new Greggs Breakfast scheme coming to Dormanstown Primary School.
Participants from partner organizations were treated to a free lunch at Beyond Housing’s Dormanstown office and enjoyed a fun activity event at The Corus Sports & Social Centre, where ice cream and hot dogs were provided by The Ladies of Steel, a voluntary community group. More than 16 tonnes of household and garden waste were collected and removed, along with various discarded items such as mattresses, sofas, and refrigerators.
In addition to waste collection, 51 litter pickers attended the event, collecting 125 full bags of litter. Beyond Housing and charity Groundwork NE & Cumbria operatives also worked on four overgrown gardens in the area. As a bonus, police officers recovered a previously stolen motorcycle that had been hidden on one of the open spaces.
Rachael Crooks, Community Partnership & Engagement Manager at Beyond Housing, expressed her satisfaction with the event’s success, emphasizing the importance of working together with partners and the local community to address waste removal and pest control issues. The success of the project was attributed to the support of partners and the active involvement of residents.
Overall, the community clean-up day in Dormanstown was a testament to the power of collaboration and community engagement in creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment. Events like these not only benefit the local community but also foster a sense of unity and shared responsibility among residents and organizations working towards a common goal.
