BMW has recently issued a recall of nearly 720,800 vehicles across various models due to the risk of a short circuit in the water pump connector. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified the affected models, including certain X1, Z4, 5 Series, 3 Series, X5, 2 Series, 4 Series, X3, and X4 vehicles. The recall was initiated as a precautionary measure to prevent a potential „thermal event“ caused by liquid entering the water pump’s electrical plug connector and resulting in a short circuit. The root cause of the issue was attributed to insufficient sealing of the water pump.
BMW submitted the recall report to the NHTSA, and impacted customers are expected to receive notification by early October. The company stated that as of August 2024, there have been approximately 18 customer complaints or concerns related to the issue in the US market, but no accidents or injuries have been reported. To address the problem, affected BMW owners are advised to visit a BMW center for inspection and potential replacement of the water pump and plug connector. Additionally, a shield will be installed to prevent fluid from dripping onto the pump from the positive crankcase ventilation system’s intake air house.
The service to rectify the water pump connector issue will be provided free of charge to owners of the affected BMW vehicles. The BMW Group, which produces millions of vehicles annually under various brands, reported a production of 2.34 million BMWs and approximately 321,400 vehicles under its other brands in 2023.
