BMW Group has issued a recall for 105,588 vehicles due to a faulty starter motor that can overheat during repeated attempts to start the engine. The recall affects a range of models, including X5, X6, and X7 SUVs, 3 Series sedans, 7 Series sedans, and 8 Series coupe and convertible models produced between September 2018 and May 2020. The majority of the recalled vehicles are 2019-2020 X5 models, totaling 68,105 units.
The issue stems from the acoustic protection material surrounding the starter motor, which is designed to reduce noise in the cabin. If engine oil leaks are present, this material can absorb oil, potentially increasing the risk of fire if the starter motor overheats. BMW estimates that the defect affects approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles.
BMW first became aware of the problem in March 2023 after receiving reports of engine no-start conditions and visible signs of thermal damage in the engine compartment of some vehicles. Following an engineering investigation, the automaker found a few incidents of thermal damage but was unsure of a direct relationship between the starter problem and the damage.
Further analysis in November 2023 revealed that mechanical issues leading to starter failures resulted in a higher number of repeated engine start attempts, causing the starter to overheat. This discovery prompted BMW to issue a voluntary recall in July after additional field incidents were reported in June.
While BMW has not received reports of accidents or injuries related to the faulty starter motor, approximately 12 customer complaints and associated field incidents have been documented. To address the issue, dealers will update the software on the recalled models at no cost to prevent electrical overload of the starter. Owner notification letters are expected to be sent out on September 23.
In conclusion, BMW Group’s recall of over 100,000 vehicles due to a faulty starter motor highlights the importance of addressing potential safety concerns promptly. By taking proactive measures to rectify the issue, BMW aims to ensure the continued safety and reliability of its vehicles for customers.
