BMW is recalling 720,796 vehicles in North America due to a faulty electrical water pump that may increase the risk of a fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents reveal that the water pumps in the affected vehicles were manufactured with „insufficient sealing“ at the electrical plug connector, making them susceptible to fluid ingress over time. This could lead to a short circuit if the connector is exposed to water, potentially causing a thermal event or fire in rare cases.
As of August, BMW has received 18 complaints from customers related to the faulty pump, but fortunately, there have been no reported injuries. Owners of the recalled vehicles can expect to receive notification by mail starting on October 4th. They are advised to contact BMW customer service to schedule an appointment with a dealer for inspection and replacement of the water pump and connector as necessary. Additionally, a protective shield will be installed to divert fluid from the ventilation system at no cost to the owner.
The recall affects various BMW models manufactured between 2012 and 2018, including the X1, X3, X4, X5, Z4, 228I, 528I, 428XI, and more. A full list of affected vehicles can be found on BMW’s website. This recall comes on the heels of several others issued by BMW since July, including recalls for faulty bolts that could cause interior cargo rail damage and detachment, as well as Takata airbag inflators that pose a risk of exploding during a crash. These airbags have been linked to at least 27 deaths and 400 injuries in the U.S.
It is crucial for owners of the affected BMW vehicles to take action promptly to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road. By following the instructions provided by BMW and scheduling an appointment for inspection and repair, owners can mitigate the risk of a potential fire hazard. Stay informed about automotive recalls and take proactive steps to address any issues promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of all road users.
