Bolivia’s President Morales claims his car was shot at amid escalating political tensions – Al Jazeera English

Bolivia’s former president, Evo Morales, recently claimed that shots were fired at his car as political tensions continue to rise in the country. The incident occurred as Morales was traveling in a rural area in the department of Cochabamba, where he has been living in exile since resigning from the presidency in November 2019.

This latest development comes amidst a backdrop of increasing political unrest in Bolivia, following the controversial presidential election in October 2019, which led to Morales‘ resignation and subsequent departure from the country. Morales, who had been in power for nearly 14 years, was accused of electoral fraud, sparking widespread protests and calls for his resignation.

Since then, Bolivia has been grappling with a power vacuum and ongoing political turmoil, with interim president Jeanine Añez facing criticism for her handling of the country’s affairs. Morales‘ Movement for Socialism (MAS) party has also been at the center of the political landscape, with Morales himself playing a prominent role in shaping the party’s direction from abroad.

The incident involving shots fired at Morales‘ car has raised concerns about the safety and security of political figures in Bolivia, as tensions between different factions continue to escalate. Morales himself has accused the current government of targeting him and his supporters, claiming that the incident was an attempt on his life.

The Bolivian government, however, has denied any involvement in the incident, with Interior Minister Arturo Murillo stating that there was no evidence to support Morales‘ claims. Murillo has also accused Morales of trying to destabilize the country and incite violence from abroad.

The situation in Bolivia remains fluid and uncertain, with political tensions running high and the country facing a deepening crisis. The international community has been closely monitoring the situation, with calls for dialogue and peaceful resolution to the political impasse.

As Bolivia continues to navigate its way through this challenging period, the safety and security of all political figures, including Morales, will be of paramount importance. The incident involving shots fired at Morales‘ car serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of the country’s political landscape and the need for all parties to engage in constructive dialogue to find a way forward.
