Buffalo man faces problems with pre-owned Honda CR-V purchased in Erie

Back-to-school costs are a significant concern for many parents, as highlighted in a recent WalletHub survey. According to the survey, 52% of parents polled expect to spend more on back-to-school expenses in 2024. This increase in costs can put a strain on families already facing financial challenges, making it difficult to afford essential items for their children’s education.

One parent, Bill Stein, found himself in a frustrating and costly situation when he set out to purchase a used car for his son’s student-teaching assignments. Stein’s experience serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of thorough research and due diligence when making major purchases.

Stein’s search for a used car led him to M&H Auto Sales and Service in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he found a 2011 Honda CR-V advertised on Facebook Marketplace. Despite noticing that the vehicle needed new brakes and tires, Stein agreed to purchase it for $4,800 in cash. However, the transaction quickly turned into a nightmare as he discovered several issues with the car and the title.

After completing the purchase, Stein realized that the title had not been properly transferred to the car lot, and Rasheed, the seller, had signed it as the previous owner’s power of attorney. This oversight made it impossible for Stein to register the vehicle in his name, leaving him unable to drive or sell it.

Stein’s attempts to rectify the situation were met with resistance from the seller, who claimed that the sale was conducted as a person-to-person transaction, despite all interactions taking place at the car lot. Faced with the prospect of taking legal action to recover his money, Stein found himself in a frustrating and time-consuming battle to resolve the issue.

Ultimately, after reaching out to the previous owner and obtaining the necessary paperwork, Stein was able to transfer the title and make the necessary repairs to the vehicle. However, the ordeal served as a valuable lesson for him about the importance of being vigilant and thorough when making purchases, especially when dealing with unfamiliar sellers.

Stein’s experience highlights the challenges that consumers can face when navigating complex transactions, particularly when dealing with used car sales. It serves as a reminder to always conduct thorough research, ask questions, and seek legal advice if needed to protect oneself from potential scams or fraudulent practices.

In conclusion, the story of Bill Stein’s car purchase gone wrong underscores the importance of being cautious and informed when making major financial decisions. As back-to-school costs continue to rise, it is essential for parents and consumers to be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their finances and ensuring that they are getting value for their money.
