The recent amendment of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act has garnered support from key stakeholders within the international business community in Ghana. The amendment, which was passed by Parliament on July 29, aims to regulate the commercial activities of shippers and address the issue of unfair and excessive charges that burden traders using Ghana’s ports and land borders for international trade.
Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, highlighted the importance of amending the existing Shippers’ Act, which was passed 50 years ago in 1974. The new law will enhance the Authority’s ability to protect the interests of shippers and ensure a more equitable relationship between shippers and their agents.
Following a meeting with representatives from the Ghana Union of Traders Association, the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Association of Ghana Industries, among others, there was a consensus that the amendment of the Shippers’ Act is a positive step towards strengthening the business community in Ghana. The President of the Association of Ghana Industries, Dr. Kwesi Humphrey Ayim-Darke, commended the government and the Shippers’ Authority for the new law, stating that it will empower shippers to engage with their agents more effectively.
Similarly, the President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association, Dr. Joseph-Obeng, expressed support for the amendment, noting that it will provide relief for traders and enable them to conduct their business more efficiently. He also highlighted the need for further clarification on certain aspects of the law, which the Shippers’ Authority has promised to address through updates to the Legislative Instrument.
Overall, the meeting between key stakeholders and the Ghana Shippers’ Authority has set a positive tone for the implementation of the amended Shippers’ Act. With the support of the business community, the Authority is poised to play a more effective role in regulating commercial activities and ensuring fair practices within the shipping industry in Ghana. This collaborative effort between the government, the Shippers’ Authority, and stakeholders bodes well for the future of international trade in the country.
