The Cameroon Red Cross has been actively involved in implementing a project aimed at supporting vulnerable communities in the country to prevent disasters and risks that could potentially affect their livelihoods. One recent workshop held in Yaoundé shed light on the project’s results, particularly focusing on its impact on flood prevention and preparedness actions in seven target localities within the Far North Region of Cameroon.
The project’s objectives are comprehensive and focused on empowering communities to implement small-scale works that can effectively reduce flood risks. These objectives include identifying vulnerable sites that could exacerbate or trigger flooding, determining the types of works needed and appropriate local techniques, raising awareness among communities about their roles in disaster risk management, and supporting communities in valuing their local capacities in flood management.
Implementation of the project involved extensive consultation with various stakeholders, including administrative, municipal, and customary authorities. Technical services were also engaged to assess and supervise the type of work to be carried out. Community outreach activities played a crucial role in engaging local populations and ensuring their active participation in the project’s implementation.
One significant aspect of the project is the plan to revegetate sections of the dike passing through the intervention area. This initiative is being guided by technical experts from ANAFOR (National Agency for Support to Forest Development), ensuring that the revegetation efforts are carried out effectively and sustainably.
The project timeline spans from June 2024 to March 2025, with the recent workshop presenting the results achieved so far. Stakeholders were briefed on the project’s impact in supporting vulnerable communities in disaster risk reduction, showcasing the tangible outcomes of the project’s interventions.
Overall, the project implemented by the Cameroon Red Cross demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable communities in the face of natural disasters. By empowering local populations, raising awareness, and implementing practical solutions, the project is making a significant difference in enhancing the resilience of communities in the Far North Region of Cameroon. The collaborative efforts of various stakeholders and the active involvement of the community are key factors contributing to the success of this initiative.
