Can a Friendly Social Media Platform Exist? Yes, If You’re in Vermont

In a world where social media platforms often prioritize engagement over civility, Front Porch Forum in Vermont stands out as a shining example of how online communities can thrive without the toxicity that plagues many other platforms. Founded in 2006 by Michael Wood-Lewis, Front Porch Forum started as a neighborhood internet mailing list in Burlington and quickly expanded to 40 Vermont neighborhoods. Wood-Lewis, an engineer by training, experimented with different ways of running the forum, ultimately deciding that real names, local membership, and strict rules against personal attacks were essential for fostering a safe and intimate online community.

Front Porch Forum’s success lies in its deliberate approach to moderation and community building. Unlike tech giants like Facebook and Twitter, which prioritize growth and engagement at all costs, Front Porch Forum moves slowly and moderates heavily. Every user post is read by moderators before publication, ensuring that the forum remains a respectful and informative space for neighbors to connect. The platform has no real-time feed, no like button, and no recommendation algorithm, focusing instead on stimulating real-world interactions among neighbors.

The impact of Front Porch Forum on Vermont communities has been profound. During major flooding in 2011 and the pandemic lockdowns of 2020, the forum played a crucial role in coordinating mutual aid efforts and connecting neighbors in need. With 235,000 active members in a state with just 265,000 households, Front Porch Forum has become a vital tool for Vermonters to interact with their neighbors without the drama and divisiveness often found on other social media platforms.

Research from the nonprofit New Public has found that Front Porch Forum leaves its users feeling more informed, civically engaged, and connected to their neighbors. In a survey of over 13,000 users, 81% reported feeling like the site made them a more informed citizen, compared to just 26% for Facebook and 32% for Nextdoor. The forum’s emphasis on civility and community building has created a unique online space where users feel safe and free to speak their minds.

While Front Porch Forum’s model may not easily translate to larger, more diverse states, its success in Vermont serves as a beacon of hope for those seeking a kinder, gentler online community. By prioritizing moderation, civility, and real-world interactions, Front Porch Forum has shown that social media doesn’t have to be toxic. As the platform continues to grow and expand, it remains committed to its core values and the unique sense of community it has fostered in the Green Mountain State.
