LOS ANGELES — A high-speed police chase that lasted over two hours came to a dramatic end on California’s 105 Freeway Sunday night. The chase involved two different vehicles and ended in a fiery PIT maneuver, leaving a trail of sparks and chaos in its wake.
The chase began just after 8 p.m. when Los Angeles police started pursuing a possibly stolen black sedan through the neighborhoods of southern Los Angeles County. The suspect, driving a vehicle with plates indicating it was likely stolen, led police on a lengthy pursuit through surface streets, circling around the area for more than an hour.
Despite driving mostly within the speed limit and only running red lights a few times, the suspect managed to evade police for an extended period. At least five police SUVs closely followed the suspect’s vehicle, but authorities did not attempt to force the chase to end with a PIT maneuver or other aggressive tactics.
After more than an hour of pursuit, the suspect abandoned the black sedan in a commercial parking lot and quickly hopped into a waiting white car. Concerned that the suspect may have been armed, officers continued to pursue the new vehicle as it sped off at high speeds, reaching over 75 mph on surface streets and eventually merging onto the 101 Freeway near downtown Los Angeles.
The chase escalated as the suspect’s vehicle traveled on the 101 and 710 freeways without headlights, reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph at times. The pursuit continued south on the 710 freeway, eventually leading to the Long Beach area more than 90 minutes after it began.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) units took over the chase from the LAPD as the suspect’s vehicle transitioned onto the 110 north. The chase then returned to surface streets in southeast Los Angeles, where the vehicle appeared to crash, prompting one person to flee on foot from the scene.
The intense pursuit finally came to an end on the 105 Freeway when the suspect’s vehicle lost a wheel, causing sparks to fly as the rims scraped against the roadway. A CHP cruiser executed a PIT maneuver, spinning the car out and disabling it. Two men and a woman emerged from the disabled vehicle and surrendered to authorities, bringing the lengthy and dangerous chase to a close.
Despite the dramatic conclusion, the 105 Freeway remained blocked for some time as authorities processed the scene. LAPD confirmed that the original driver of the stolen black sedan was not in the white vehicle when the chase ended but was apprehended separately.
In conclusion, the high-speed police chase that spanned multiple freeways and surface streets in Los Angeles County ended in a fiery and dramatic fashion on the 105 Freeway. The swift actions of law enforcement ultimately brought the dangerous pursuit to a safe conclusion, ensuring the safety of both the public and the suspects involved.
