Cashless Society reports 20,035 cashless transactions in February

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s Cashless Society programme, launched in 2023, has been making significant strides in promoting cashless transactions across the country. As of February this year, the programme has recorded an impressive 20,035 cashless transactions, with 2,740 traders successfully registered during the same period.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching announced that the programme, which initially started in Melaka, has now been expanded to three more states – Johor, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang. The goal for 2024 is to implement the Cashless Society programme in 61 selected locations in these three states, with a focus on raising awareness among the local community and traders about the benefits of cashless payments.

Teo highlighted the collaboration with the Johor government, the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda), and other strategic partners in implementing the programme. Initiatives such as Cashless@NaDi in selected Felda settlements, the Cashless month campaign, and the Cashless Carnival are aimed at promoting the adoption of technology such as e-wallets, DuitNow, QR codes, and debit/credit cards to boost the local economy.

In Johor, the Cashless@NaDi programme will be implemented in 17 locations within the Felda settlements, with a primary focus on facilitating micro- and small-scale traders in accepting and utilizing cashless payment methods. The ultimate goal is to reach 10,000 cashless transactions by the end of 2024 through strategic collaboration between the state government, MCMC, Felda, financial service providers, and banks.

The Cashless Society programme is not just about promoting convenience but also about instilling confidence in the adoption of cashless payments among Malaysians. It aims to educate the public on the safety, ease, and speed of digital payments, ultimately promoting a cashless economy in the country.

Overall, the Cashless Society programme is a crucial initiative in Malaysia’s journey towards a more digital and efficient economy. With the support of various stakeholders and strategic partnerships, the programme is set to make a significant impact in promoting cashless transactions and driving economic growth in the country.
