The 2024 CrossFit Games in Texas took a tragic turn when an athlete drowned during a swimming event. The athlete was identified as 28-year-old Lazar Đukić from Serbia, according to a report by WFAA. The incident occurred during the first event of the games, known as „Lake Day,“ which involved a 3.5-mile run followed by an 800-meter swim.
Witnesses reported that Đukić appeared to be struggling in the water before going under. Cole Learn, a competitor from Canada, described seeing the athlete doing small turns in the water in an attempt to stay afloat before ultimately disappearing beneath the surface. Despite efforts to alert lifeguards, Đukić did not resurface.
Emergency services were called to the Marine Creek Reservoir, where the event was taking place, and a dive team and drones were used to locate the athlete’s body. Unfortunately, Đukić was pronounced dead, and the remaining events of the day were canceled as a result.
CrossFit CEO Don Faul expressed his condolences to the athlete’s family and the community, emphasizing the need to focus on their well-being during such a tragic event. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning is currently underway, with law enforcement looking into the event’s safety protocols and response.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of athletes during CrossFit competitions. While competitors are required to sign waivers, these documents primarily protect race directors and sponsors rather than the athletes themselves. Instances of athletes struggling during swimming events have been reported in the past, highlighting the need for improved safety measures.
Despite Marine Creek Lake being described as calm and suitable for water sports, tragedies like this serve as a reminder of the inherent risks involved in competitive events. The CrossFit community mourns the loss of Lazar Đukić and will undoubtedly take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on honoring the memory of the fallen athlete and ensuring the safety of all participants in future CrossFit Games.
