Changing your hobby can enhance memory and mental health, according to Dr. Michael Mosley.

Dr. Michael Mosley, known for his popular diet plans, has recently highlighted the surprising benefits of playing a musical instrument. In a recent study, 45 individuals using mental health services were randomly assigned to either play the drums for 90 minutes a week or be part of a control group. The results were impressive, with a significant decrease in anxiety and depression levels among the drum players, and these effects were maintained even three months after the sessions ended.

But the benefits of playing a musical instrument go beyond mental health. Dr. Mosley also pointed out the physical advantages, noting that many mental health conditions are linked to chronic inflammation in the body. In the study, markers of inflammation improved in the drum players, showcasing the holistic benefits of engaging in musical activities.

Dr. Sofia Seinfeld, a researcher from Catalonia’s Open University, further emphasized the cognitive advantages of learning to play an instrument. In her study involving participants aged 60 to 85 who had never played the piano before, daily lessons and practice sessions led to significant improvements in cognitive functions. Compared to leisure activities like painting or sports, musical training showed higher enhancements in executive functions, divided attention, and inventory control – skills crucial for daily tasks like planning and cooking.

Seinfeld’s research also highlighted the positive impact of music on mood and emotional well-being. Playing a musical instrument not only sharpens cognitive abilities but also enhances emotional states, making it a well-rounded activity for overall health and well-being.

The findings from both Dr. Mosley and Dr. Seinfeld underscore the transformative power of music in improving mental, physical, and cognitive health. Regardless of age, picking up a musical instrument can be a rewarding and beneficial endeavor, offering a unique avenue for self-expression and personal growth.

In conclusion, the research-backed benefits of playing a musical instrument are clear. From reducing anxiety and depression to improving cognitive functions and emotional well-being, engaging in musical activities can have a profound impact on overall health. So, whether it’s strumming a guitar, tickling the ivories, or banging on drums, incorporating music into your daily routine may just be the key to a happier, healthier life.
