Crime prevention and community engagement are key components of the ‘Rakan Kolaborasi Taman Angkat’ programme, which has been implemented in seven community areas in Cheras. These pilot locations include Perumahan Awam (PA) Seri Sabah 3B, PA Seri Pulau Pinang, Taman Midah, Taman Miharja Fasa1, People’s Housing Programme (PPR) Salak Selatan, PPR Raya Permai, and PPR Pinggiran. The programme, launched in January, aims to facilitate the flow of information to authorities and enhance safety and order within the community.
Cheras district police chief ACP Ravindar Singh Sarban Singh highlighted the importance of engaging housing estates and communities in sharing information about criminal activities in their areas. The programme involves appointing sub-committee members from the community, educating them about local crimes, and teaching them how to report information safely and confidentially. By becoming the eyes and ears of the police, residents play a vital role in crime prevention and reduction.
After nearly eight months of implementation, it was observed that crime reports in residential areas were not a major concern. However, criminal activities tended to occur more frequently in open areas. This highlights the active cooperation of the community in reporting criminal activities within their neighborhoods. The programme has effectively encouraged residents to be proactive in ensuring the safety and security of their surroundings.
Datuk Azman Abidin, the political secretary to the Prime Minister and chairman of the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Kuala Lumpur, emphasized the importance of enhancing the relationship between the police and the community. By supporting initiatives like ‘Rakan Kolaborasi Taman Angkat,’ the public can contribute to crime prevention efforts and improve overall security and public order. The success of the programme in these pilot locations may lead to its expansion to other areas in the future.
In conclusion, the collaboration between the police and the community is essential for effective crime prevention. The ‘Rakan Kolaborasi Taman Angkat’ programme serves as a platform for residents to actively participate in maintaining the safety and security of their neighborhoods. With continued support and collaboration from both the authorities and the public, initiatives like this can make a significant impact in reducing crime and creating a safer environment for all.
