Christian lawyer in Pakistan calls on authorities to resist violent mobs, conduct fair investigation of alleged ‚blasphemy‘ incident

In a recent development in Pakistan, a Christian woman named Saima from the village of Khator, Gojra, has been arrested and charged under the country’s blasphemy law. The charges stem from accusations made by her Muslim neighbor, Muhammad Haider, who claimed to have witnessed Saima throwing a bag of wastepaper into a plot next to his home. Haider alleged that the bag contained pages of the Quran, including one with a name and phone number written on it. When confronted by Haider and another neighbor, Saima reportedly responded rudely, leading to her arrest on August 7.

Christian lawyer and Chairman of the Minorities Alliance Pakistan, Akmal Bhatti, has spoken out against the charges, calling them baseless and driven by ulterior motives. Bhatti believes that Saima is being unfairly targeted by her Muslim neighbors, leading to her arrest and subsequent mistreatment. The incident has sparked tension and unrest in the area, with a radical Islamist mob forming to target Saima and her family.

Saima attempted to flee and hide in nearby crop fields but was pursued and tortured by the enraged mob until police intervened and took her and her family into custody for their safety. The following day, authorities formally charged Saima, a move that Bhatti believes was influenced by the pressure from the mob. He is now urging the police to withdraw the charges and conduct a fair and unbiased investigation in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code.

This incident is not an isolated one in Pakistan, where religious minorities, including Christians, often face discrimination and violence. According to reports, there have been at least 70 violent attacks against Pakistani Christians in the first half of 2024, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by religious minorities in the country. The case of Saima serves as a stark reminder of the need for justice and protection for all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs.

In conclusion, the situation involving Saima in Pakistan highlights the complex issues surrounding blasphemy laws and religious tensions in the country. It is essential for authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure that justice is served and that individuals are not unfairly targeted due to their religious affiliation. The case also underscores the importance of upholding religious freedom and protecting the rights of all citizens, regardless of their faith.
