Clements Middle School puts in a lot of effort

Clements Middle School, located in a high-poverty area, is defying the odds when it comes to academic success. Despite the challenges that come with a student body where approximately 80 percent are eligible for free and reduced lunches, the staff and administration at Clements are dedicated to ensuring that education remains a top priority for all students.

Principal Joy Scavella emphasizes the importance of reading as the foundation for success in all areas. The school has a strong focus on literacy, with a culture that encourages and rewards reading. Each year, a $1,000 prize is awarded to the student who reads the most books and completes quality book reports. These reports are uploaded into My Big Campus, an online platform used by teachers to enhance instructional practices. This emphasis on reading not only improves students‘ literacy skills but also fosters a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.

In addition to the focus on literacy, Clements Middle School is also committed to preparing students for college and career readiness. A new partnership with Georgia Piedmont Technical College will provide students with the resources and support they need to make the connection between their performance in school and their future achievements. By offering opportunities for students to explore various career paths and gain valuable skills, Clements is equipping its students with the tools they need to succeed in the future.

Superintendent Gary Mathews commends the teachers at Clements for their dedication and ability to make a positive impact on their students‘ learning. Despite the challenges posed by poverty, the school’s language arts and math scores consistently exceed state averages, with scores in the 80s and 90s. While the school may not have met Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Act, the results on Georgia’s assessments demonstrate the effectiveness of the teachers at Clements in helping students achieve academic success.

Overall, Clements Middle School serves as a shining example of how dedication, hard work, and a supportive environment can lead to academic success, even in the face of adversity. By prioritizing literacy, fostering a culture of high expectations, and providing students with the resources they need to succeed, Clements is helping its students overcome the challenges of poverty and reach their full potential.
