CMPD officer discusses strategies for preventing car thefts amid increasing number of stolen vehicles

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has reported an increase in stolen vehicles in the city, according to their mid-year crime report. Between January 1 and June 30 of 2024, there were 4,011 vehicle thefts, compared to 3,731 thefts during the same period in 2023. This rise in car thefts has raised concerns among residents and law enforcement officers alike.

Officer Jonathan Frisk, who specializes in crime prevention, stated that vehicle thefts are occurring throughout the city, with no specific area being targeted. This widespread issue has left many residents feeling uneasy about the safety of their vehicles. One such resident, Ryan Hull, shared his experience of someone attempting to steal his Hyundai at an apartment complex in South End. Despite the unsuccessful attempt, the incident left him feeling wary about parking his car in certain areas.

In response to the recent trend of Kias and Hyundais being targeted by thieves, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has been proactive in informing drivers about ways to protect their vehicles. Officer Frisk recommends installing a steering wheel lock as a deterrent against theft. This simple device can prevent thieves from being able to turn the wheel and drive away with the vehicle.

In addition to using a steering wheel lock, Officer Frisk advises drivers to keep their car doors locked at all times and store their keys in a secure location. Parking in well-lit areas and investing in a security system with cameras can also help deter thieves. The presence of surveillance cameras and regular police patrols in neighborhoods can further enhance the security of parked vehicles.

For drivers who have specific concerns about the theft of their car, Officer Frisk suggests reaching out to the manufacturer or dealership for assistance. By taking proactive measures to protect their vehicles, residents can reduce the risk of falling victim to car theft in Charlotte.

Overall, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is committed to addressing the issue of stolen vehicles in the city and working towards reducing the number of incidents. Through community awareness, proactive measures, and collaboration with residents, law enforcement aims to create a safer environment for all drivers in Charlotte.
