The Details project aims to address barriers that prevent people from accessing vital community resources in California, particularly in the areas of housing, health, nutrition, employment, and education. The project will establish community resource navigators in up to ten California Public Libraries to help individuals connect with the services they need.
The program will assist California public libraries in building staff skills and knowledge about social care resources and creating or joining a hub of local social service organizations. Collaboration with existing service providers will be a key component of each successful project. By expanding their capacity to provide effective social service assistance, libraries will help build resilience and improve the health and wellbeing of their communities.
Participating libraries will receive funds of up to $60,000 and partner with at least two California-based organizations providing social services. They will also receive training from the California State Library and engage with a cohort of library staff focused on developing skills, tools, and knowledge to implement the project effectively. Monthly virtual meetings, needs assessments, and the establishment of a location in the library for appointments are among the requirements for awardees.
During the grant period, each library will conduct a needs assessment to identify the specific needs of their community. Shared conversations and training on partnerships, needs assessments, and asset mapping will be provided by the California State Library to support the success of the projects. Libraries interested in participating in the Community Connections project will need to identify a Community Resource Specialist (CRS) to provide social service information and referrals to patrons.
Eligibility for the project is open to all California public libraries that meet the criteria outlined by the California State Library. Applicants are expected to contribute a local match to the grant funds in the form of cash or in-kind contributions, although there is no minimum amount required.
Overall, the Details project presents an opportunity for California public libraries to enhance their capacity to connect individuals with vital community resources. By establishing community resource navigators and fostering collaborations with social service organizations, libraries can play a crucial role in improving the well-being of their communities.
