Controversial Immigration Plan in Sweden Sparks Concern Over ‚Snitch Law‘

In Sweden, a controversial proposal is being explored by a government-appointed committee that would require public sector workers to report undocumented people to authorities. This proposal, referred to as the „snitch law“ by some, was included in a 2022 agreement between right-wing parties in the country. The deal paved the way for a coalition government involving three center-right parties with parliamentary support from the far-right anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD).

The proposal has faced widespread opposition from various professionals, including doctors, social workers, and librarians. These groups have raised concerns about the inhumane nature of the proposal and its potential impact on vulnerable populations. Michele LeVoy of the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants described the proposal as „utterly inhumane“ and warned that it could lead to fear and reluctance to access essential services.

Professional associations have also expressed concerns about the erosion of trust that could result from the proposal. They fear that it could fuel racism and stigmatization, rather than addressing the root causes of undocumented migration. The proposal is part of a growing trend across Europe to criminalize solidarity with undocumented people, with similar measures being considered in countries like Finland and Germany.

Experts like Jacob Lind, a postdoctoral researcher in international migration, believe that the proposal is unlikely to reduce the number of undocumented people in Sweden. Instead, it may further isolate and exploit vulnerable individuals, leading to increased suffering and fear. As of December 2023, over 150 Swedish regions, municipalities, trade unions, and civil society groups have come out against the proposal, forming a unique alliance to oppose it.

The Swedish Medical Association (SMA) has been vocal in its opposition to the proposal, citing ethical concerns about monitoring and reporting patients. The association argues that the reporting requirements would go against professional ethics rules that prioritize providing care without discrimination. The government has acknowledged these concerns and is examining whether the duty to provide information conflicts with professional values, particularly in healthcare settings.

Despite the government’s assertion that reporting requirements support legal migration and uphold government decisions, many professionals remain unconvinced. The professional ethics council for teachers has even suggested that civil disobedience may be necessary if the proposal becomes reality. Librarians, too, have expressed strong opposition to the idea, with many stating they would rather lose their jobs than report those in need.

Ultimately, the debate over the proposal in Sweden highlights larger issues of trust, humanity, and democracy. The opposition from a wide range of professionals and civil society groups underscores the importance of upholding ethical principles and protecting the rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status. As the government continues to consider the proposal, it will be crucial to listen to the concerns raised by those on the front lines of providing care and support to vulnerable populations.
