The Land Public Transport Agency is taking a firm stance against errant bus drivers and operators in an effort to reduce the number of road crashes involving buses. Director-General Datuk Azlan Shah Al Bakri Shah has emphasized the importance of enforcing regulations to ensure the safety of passengers and other road users.
In light of recent serious bus crashes, the agency is increasing enforcement actions against bus operators who fail to comply with the Road Transport Act 1987. Azlan Shah stated that operators who do not adhere to safety regulations will face severe consequences, including the suspension and revocation of their licences.
One tragic incident that highlighted the need for stricter enforcement occurred on June 29, where two Chinese nationals lost their lives in a bus crash descending from Genting Highlands. The Transport Ministry later revealed that the bus involved had an expired operating permit, underscoring the importance of proper maintenance and compliance with regulations.
According to Azlan Shah, there have been up to 60 bus crashes since 2022 caused by driver negligence and technical issues with the vehicles. To prevent such accidents, bus operators must ensure that their drivers are well-rested and alert, with a maximum driving time of four hours followed by a 30-minute break.
Regular maintenance and inspections of buses are also crucial in preventing road crashes. Commercial vehicles, including buses, are required by law to undergo periodic inspections at the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (CVIC) every six months. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in the suspension of the operator’s licence.
The agency is working in collaboration with other departments and enforcement bodies, such as the Road Transport Department, police, and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros), to improve safety policies. However, Azlan Shah stressed that the cooperation of bus operators and stakeholders is essential for the success of these efforts.
In addition to enforcement measures, the agency is leveraging technology to enhance monitoring of vehicle speed and driver behavior. The installation of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in buses allows for proactive detection and addressing of safety issues before they escalate into tragedies.
Azlan Shah reassured the public that the Transport Ministry is dedicated to enhancing the safety of land public transport. He encouraged individuals to report safety violations by bus operators through various channels, including a dedicated hotline, WhatsApp, and email.
Overall, the agency’s efforts to crack down on errant bus operators and improve safety standards are crucial in reducing road crashes and ensuring the well-being of passengers and drivers. By enforcing regulations, conducting regular inspections, and leveraging technology, the Land Public Transport Agency is taking proactive steps towards a safer public transport system.
