As the rainy season approaches Central Vietnam in late August and early September 2024, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has predicted a shift towards La Niña, increasing the likelihood of heavy rainfall and potential flooding. In response to this forecast, various units and localities across Da Nang have begun preparations for flood prevention and response to widespread inundation.
One of the key measures being taken is the dredging and maintenance of drainage systems throughout the city. Thanh Khe District People’s Committee has spearheaded efforts to clear 95 drainage channels and sewers across 10 wards, focusing on areas prone to severe flooding. Contractors have already completed dredging work on 33 drainage routes and are currently working on 40 more, with plans to finish all routes by mid-October 2024. The Thanh Khe District Urban Management Division has also mobilized residents to assist in clearing drainage channels, ensuring that water can flow freely during heavy rains.
In addition to drainage dredging, the municipal Department of Construction has collaborated with local units to identify flood-prone areas in the city. A total of 124 potential flood points have been identified, with 10 key areas highlighted as being at high risk of severe flooding during heavy rainfall. By pinpointing these vulnerable areas, authorities can implement targeted measures to mitigate the impact of flooding and protect residents and infrastructure.
To further enhance flood response capabilities, the Department of Construction has developed urban flood response scenarios for the city. These scenarios outline specific tasks to be carried out before, during, and after heavy rains, ranging from moderate to very heavy rainfall events. By proactively planning for various weather conditions, Da Nang can better prepare for potential flooding and minimize its impact on the community.
The municipal People’s Committee has directed departments, agencies, and units to undertake a series of tasks, solutions, and strategies to address flooding in the city. These measures include both immediate responses to flooding events and long-term strategies to gradually reduce the risk of inundation. By taking a comprehensive approach to flood prevention and response, Da Nang aims to safeguard its residents and infrastructure during the upcoming rainy season.
In conclusion, as the ENSO phenomenon shifts towards La Niña and the rainy season approaches Central Vietnam, Da Nang is taking proactive steps to prepare for potential flooding. Through drainage dredging, identification of flood-prone areas, and development of urban flood response scenarios, the city is working to enhance its resilience to heavy rainfall and mitigate the impact of flooding on the community. By implementing these measures, Da Nang is striving to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents in the face of unpredictable weather conditions.
