Dramatic bodycam footage captures rescue of mother from sinking car in West Orange, Texas

A 12-year-old boy’s quick thinking and bravery helped save his mother’s life in a harrowing incident that unfolded in West Orange, Texas. On July 24, Jonquetta Winbush experienced a seizure while driving, causing her to veer off the road and into a body of water. Her two children, 16-year-old Bri-Asia and 12-year-old Dwight, were in the car with her at the time.

In newly released police bodycam video, Dwight can be heard frantically calling for help as he flags down West Orange Officer Charles Cobb. „She’s having a seizure! She’s stuck! She’s in the water, help her!“ Dwight shouts, alerting the officer to the dire situation unfolding.

Officer Cobb, along with several good Samaritans, rushed to the scene at a pond off Highway 87 in West Orange. They found Winbush’s gray car partially submerged in the water, with Winbush still inside. Dwight had managed to escape the car and swim to safety before seeking help from passersby.

One of the bystanders, Epifanio Munguia, described the tense moments as they worked to rescue Winbush from the sinking car. Despite the challenges they faced, including the car beginning to sink further, the group was able to break the back window and pull Winbush to safety.

Winbush was unconscious, without a pulse, and not breathing when she was pulled from the water. Officer Cobb immediately began administering CPR, working tirelessly to revive her. Munguia recalled the moment when they felt Winbush’s pulse return, describing it as a miraculous turning point in the rescue effort.

After more than three weeks on a ventilator, Winbush is now recovering in a hospital. Her sister, Bevnisha Holman, expressed gratitude for the quick-thinking rescuers who sprang into action without hesitation. The family credits the combined efforts of Officer Cobb, Munguia, and the other good Samaritans for saving Winbush’s life.

The city of West Orange honored Officer Cobb and the brave individuals involved in the rescue with a life-saving award and letter of commendation on August 13. The community came together to recognize their heroic actions in a time of crisis.

As Winbush continues her recovery journey, her family remains thankful for the selfless individuals who stepped in to help during a moment of great need. The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of quick action and teamwork in emergency situations.
