Education majors from SUNY collaborate with international students at annual NASA/GLOBE meeting | Local News, Sports, Employment opportunities

Two State University of New York at Fredonia education majors, Alyssa Wright and Gregory Holmberg, recently had the opportunity to guide a group of students during the NASA/GLOBE annual meeting held on campus. This international science education initiative, sponsored by NASA, NOAA, NSF, and the U.S. Department of State, brought together students from various countries, including Colombia, Croatia, Kenya, Malta, Nigeria, Oman, Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, and several states in the U.S.

Wright, a recent graduate with a degree in Adolescence Education: Biology, and Holmberg, a senior majoring in Adolescence Education: Earth Science, led the group through a series of activities focused on the natural and geological history of the Great Lakes. They also took the students on hikes in the lodge’s forest areas, utilizing different forms of technology to enhance their understanding of science and the environment.

One of the highlights of the experience was the opportunity for the students to collect data using GLOBE protocols at the College Lodge and nearby Point Gratiot Park along Lake Erie. They made cloud observations, measured tree height and circumference, examined soil characteristics, and conducted water quality testing, providing a comprehensive hands-on learning experience in Earth systems science.

Wright expressed her excitement about working with international students, emphasizing her interest in learning about different cultures and educational systems. She saw this experience as a valuable opportunity to make connections with people from around the world and continue her own learning journey.

The students also had the chance to bond and enjoy recreational activities at the College Lodge, thanks to the hospitality of their host, DJ. S’mores around the fire, games, and volleyball added a fun and social element to the educational experience, creating lasting memories for all involved.

Overall, the NASA/GLOBE annual meeting at SUNY Fredonia exceeded expectations, providing a unique and enriching experience for students from diverse backgrounds. The combination of academic learning, cultural exchange, and outdoor exploration made this event a truly memorable and impactful opportunity for all participants.
