Education Minister Paul Givan recently spoke at Belfast High School as thousands of students received their AS and A-level results. This year, the total number of A-level entries in Northern Ireland remained stable at 32,873, with 8.2% of entries achieving an A grade. Overall, 98.5% of students achieved A– E grades, similar to the previous year.
In his address, Mr. Givan highlighted the importance of retaining talent in Northern Ireland. He noted that there is a growing trend of young people wanting to stay in the region, rather than seeking opportunities elsewhere. This shift is significant, as a study from think tank Pivotal found that over 40% of local young people planned to leave Northern Ireland for work or further study.
The Education Minister emphasized the need to provide the necessary courses and spaces in universities to accommodate those who wish to stay. He also mentioned that Northern Ireland offers reduced tuition fees compared to other parts of the UK, making it an attractive option for students. Additionally, with unemployment levels below 2% and a thriving business sector, Northern Ireland is becoming an appealing place to work and live.
Mr. Givan expressed pride in the educational achievements of students in Northern Ireland, stating that the results are back to where they were in 2019. He emphasized the importance of continuing to excel in education to maintain the region’s reputation as a leader in academic performance.
In light of recent racially motivated hate crimes in Belfast, Mr. Givan also addressed the issue of diversity and inclusivity in schools. He commended the efforts of schools in integrating students from different backgrounds and ensuring that everyone feels safe and valued. The Education Minister stressed the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive environment within schools to foster a sense of belonging for all students.
Overall, Mr. Givan’s remarks underscore the positive developments in education and the growing appeal of Northern Ireland as a place to study and work. By focusing on retaining talent, promoting inclusivity, and maintaining high educational standards, Northern Ireland is poised to continue its success in the academic arena.
