In recent weeks, the Local Police of Palafrugell has launched the „Enjoy the Summer Responsibly“ campaign with the aim of improving public order, civility, and traffic safety.
In terms of traffic, surveillance and control have been intensified during the month of August due to a significant increase in alcohol and drug consumption while driving. Checkpoints have been set up at various locations in the town where a total of 321 vehicles have been filtered and checked.
Out of these, more than 25%, specifically 58 drivers, tested positive for alcohol consumption, 5 tested positive for drugs, and 3 individuals refused to take the mandatory tests. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against 8 of these individuals for a traffic safety offense.
During the checkpoints, the police’s drone unit detected several vehicles performing evasive maneuvers to avoid being stopped. Two vehicles were caught attempting to switch drivers, another vehicle made an illegal U-turn and crossed the median through a pedestrian crossing, and three more were caught trying to flee through a nearby rural path. All were identified and reported.
Additionally, the police intervened in 7 traffic accidents where alcohol consumption was a determining factor. Most of the accidents and positive tests were detected during checkpoints coinciding with the closure of nightlife establishments, with the majority of drivers being young individuals.
The City Council and the Local Police are urging responsibility and reminding the public that alcohol and drug consumption significantly worsen driving ability. It is crucial for everyone to prioritize safety on the roads and make responsible decisions to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer.
