Elon’s Office of Information Technology recently hosted a summer retreat that centered around the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into campus operations. The event aimed to explore the potential benefits of AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, MagicSchool, and ChatGPT in enhancing productivity and teaching within the university community. The retreat highlighted AI’s ability to streamline work processes and personalize education, showcasing the transformative impact of AI technology in various aspects of campus life.

One of the key objectives of the retreat was to deepen the understanding of AI utilization within the IT sector and examine its current applications across the campus community. By engaging in extensive discussions and hands-on activities, members of the Office of Information Technology sought to explore the opportunities for integrating AI into their daily operations. The event served as a platform for IT professionals to collaborate, share insights, and envision the future of AI within the university setting.

During the retreat, Michael Miller, an executive partner for higher education from Gartner, emphasized the significant impact of AI in reducing repetitive and tedious tasks from IT to the classroom. He highlighted the growing interest and investment in AI technology, underscoring its potential to revolutionize the way technology is used and perceived in educational settings. The discussions at the retreat provided valuable insights into the evolving role of AI in enhancing teaching and learning experiences for students and faculty alike.

Gartner’s predictions for the evolution of AI further underscored the transformative potential of this technology in education. Led by Claudia Sparks, associate director of Enterprise Solutions, and Dhvani Toprani, assistant director of Learning Design and Support, the retreat featured an expo showcasing a range of AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, ClickUp Brain, Adobe Firefly, Elicit (Research), and MagicSchool AI. Participants had the opportunity to explore these tools firsthand, gaining valuable insights into their capabilities and potential applications within the university environment. The interactive nature of the expo fostered collaboration and knowledge sharing among IT professionals, enabling them to envision new possibilities for leveraging AI technology on campus.

Christopher Waters, associate vice president of Information Technology and chief information officer, emphasized the importance of equipping IT staff with the necessary skills to support the campus community through the integration of AI tools. By exploring how AI can enhance teaching, learning, and university operations, the IT team at Elon is poised to drive innovation and efficiency across campus. The adoption of AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot chatbot further demonstrates Elon’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance the overall student and faculty experience.

In response to the growing interest in AI across campus, Elon has established a community of practice to collaboratively explore the efficient and responsible use of AI technology. Through initiatives such as AI Grants and ongoing professional development opportunities, Elon is empowering its community to harness the power of AI in a secure and ethical manner. By fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration, Elon is well-positioned to lead the way in leveraging AI technology to enhance operational processes and drive positive change within the university community.
