Enhancing the performance of Philippine students in global evaluations

The new education secretary, Juan Edgardo Angara, has wasted no time in addressing the pressing issue of poor student performance in international assessments. The recent agreement signed with Khan Academy, an online education nonprofit, aims to improve the competencies of Filipino students and elevate their scores in the 2025 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) examinations. This initiative comes at a crucial time as our students have consistently ranked at the bottom of these assessments, tarnishing the country’s reputation as a leader in education in Asia.

Khan Academy, founded by educator Salman Khan, will provide learning materials to approximately 1,000 public schools across the country. The project is expected to have a significant impact on student competencies, although the results may not be immediately evident in the upcoming 2025 tests. It typically takes around three years to see improvements in competency, so the effects of this collaboration may be more apparent in the 2029 assessments.

The rationale behind this project lies in the fact that many Filipino students already spend a considerable amount of time online, engaging in activities such as playing games and watching tutorials on platforms like YouTube. By leveraging Khan Academy’s digital learning modules, students can access educational content in a format that is familiar and engaging to them. The focus will be on mathematics, science, and reading – areas where Filipino students have struggled compared to their global counterparts.

The bite-sized learning modules provided by Khan Academy are designed to enhance the teaching process by offering lessons in manageable segments followed by practice exercises. This approach aligns with research indicating that learning is most effective when delivered in small doses with opportunities for reinforcement. The modules also address real-world issues, making the learning experience more practical and relevant for students.

Despite the potential benefits of this initiative, challenges remain, particularly in areas with weak internet connectivity and a lack of computers in schools. To address these issues, an omnichannel marketing approach is recommended, ensuring that educational content is accessible through various channels to accommodate different learning environments. Additionally, alternative learning systems, such as educational TV programs like „Batibot“ and the Knowledge Channel, can supplement online resources in schools with limited technology access.

Furthermore, efforts to alleviate the burden on teachers, such as hiring more administrative staff and revising curriculum based on feedback, are crucial for the successful implementation of educational reforms. The Department of Education’s commitment to continuous improvement and responsiveness to the needs of educators and students is commendable, signaling a positive direction for the future of education in the Philippines.

In conclusion, while the road to educational reform may be long and challenging, initiatives like the partnership with Khan Academy and efforts to support teachers and students are steps in the right direction. By addressing the underlying issues affecting student performance and leveraging innovative solutions, the Department of Education is laying the groundwork for a more effective and inclusive education system that can empower Filipino students to excel on a global stage.
