This report highlighted the growing concern over the impact of social media on young people’s mental well-being. The surgeon general’s warning prompted further action to address this issue, including a New York Times Op-Ed in June 2024, where Dr. Murthy called for a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms to alert users to the potential mental health harms associated with excessive use.
Following this call to action, New York Governor Kathy Hochul introduced the SAFE for Kids Act in June, aimed at restricting addictive feeds on social media platforms for children under 18. These initiatives underscore the urgent need to address the negative effects of social media on young people and take steps to protect their mental health.
The statistics on social media use among adolescents are concerning. Up to 95% of youth aged 13-17 report using a social media platform, with more than a third admitting to using it „almost constantly.“ Adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, while nearly half of adolescents say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies. Additionally, 75% of adolescents feel that social media sites are not effectively addressing online harassment and cyberbullying.
The risks associated with social media use are varied and can have serious consequences for young people. Negative impacts may include issues with impulse control, emotional learning and behavior, body dissatisfaction, cyberbullying, exposure to triggering content, and predatory behavior. Disturbingly, 60% of teen girls report being contacted by strangers on social media, leading to feelings of discomfort and vulnerability.
To keep our kids safe on social media, it is essential to set limits on screen time for everyone in the household. Establishing boundaries and implementing screen-free times, such as during meals or before bedtime, can help reduce the negative effects of excessive screen use. Communication is key, so parents should engage in open discussions with their children about their online activities and be prepared to offer support and guidance.
Monitoring your child’s behavior and patterns is crucial in identifying any potential issues related to social media use. Changes in sleep patterns, withdrawal from social activities, or alterations in behavior may indicate a problem that requires professional mental health support. Turning on privacy settings, monitoring accounts, and providing alternative activities for children to engage in away from screens are also important steps in safeguarding their well-being.
While social media can offer benefits such as community building and global connections, it is essential to be aware of the potential risks it poses to young people’s mental health. By understanding these risks and taking proactive measures to protect our children, we can help ensure a safer and healthier online environment for the next generation.
