Michael Dekker and Taylor Horner are two individuals who have made a significant impact on the community through their efforts to revitalize the Northridge shopping center in north Tulsa. Harold Jones, a key figure in this project, has invested over $350,000 into refurbishing the shopping center, with plans to invest even more in the future. His vision for the center includes amenities such as eateries, an arcade, and a sports bar, aiming to create a one-stop destination for the community.
Jones, along with his wife Natalie Jones, opened the first urgent care clinic in north Tulsa, Novastar Family Medical, in 2023. Natalie, a nurse practitioner, oversees the clinic, while Harold, a former football player and finance professional, brings his business acumen to the project. Their combined expertise and passion for community development have driven the revitalization efforts at the Northridge shopping center.
The journey to revitalize the shopping center began when the former owner reached out to Jones about the property. Despite initial reservations due to the dilapidated state of the buildings, Jones saw the potential for positive change in the community. With a focus on providing essential services and amenities, he embarked on a mission to transform the shopping center into a vibrant hub for the neighborhood.
The revitalization project is being carried out in two phases, with the first phase expected to be completed by the end of the year. Jones envisions a variety of businesses and services housed within the refurbished buildings, including restaurants, an arcade, a coffee shop, and a co-working space. Additionally, he plans to offer low-cost meals to students at nearby McLain High School, addressing food insecurity issues that can hinder educational success.
One of the key goals of the project is to empower local entrepreneurs and provide them with opportunities to showcase their talents and businesses. Jones believes in the importance of supporting Black-owned businesses and creating a safe and welcoming environment for the community. By offering resources and amenities that cater to the needs of the neighborhood, the revitalized Northridge shopping center aims to become a hub of economic activity and community engagement.
As the project progresses, Jones and his team remain committed to their vision of creating a thriving and inclusive space for residents of north Tulsa. Through their dedication and hard work, they hope to inspire others to invest in their communities and make a positive impact on the lives of those around them. The revitalization of the Northridge shopping center serves as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the potential for transformation through collective action.
