The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) is taking proactive steps to address issues within local communities by expanding the Community-Based Organisation (CBO) directory to cover all districts and states. This initiative aims to tackle problems such as abuse, neglect, and violence that affect vulnerable groups like children, women, and the elderly.
Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri highlighted the importance of the CBO directory, which was first introduced in February. It has already been launched in several states, with plans to roll it out in Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak next month. The goal is to extend the directory to 105 districts by the end of the year, providing a comprehensive guide for accessing vital information and expediting actions by CBOs in delivering assistance and support to communities in need.
Nancy emphasized that the CBO directory plays a crucial role in facilitating quick responses during emergencies involving target groups. By having names and contact numbers readily available, necessary services can be promptly delivered to those in need. This streamlined process has already shown positive results, particularly when the ministry is contacted for assistance.
The CBO comprises various committees and welfare volunteers, including the Senior Citizens Activity Centre, the Community-Based Rehabilitation Programme, and the Child Welfare Teams. These groups work closely with the Social Welfare Department (JKM) to support and protect vulnerable individuals under the ministry’s purview.
In addition to expanding the CBO directory, Nancy urged grassroots and community leaders to strengthen connections within their communities. By sharing information about the directory, they can ensure that target groups are fully informed of the available resources and support services. This collaborative effort is essential in reaching out to those in need and providing them with the necessary assistance.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who is also the Papar Member of Parliament (MP), emphasized that the establishment of the CBO directory enhances the functions of KPWKM and JKM. It also benefits other agencies, such as the service centers of MPs and assemblymen in all districts. This initiative promotes more organized grassroots efforts in assisting communities, including development projects and aid distribution to targeted groups.
Overall, the expansion of the CBO directory is a significant step towards improving community support systems and addressing social issues at the local level. By enhancing communication and collaboration among various stakeholders, the ministry aims to create a more responsive and effective network for assisting vulnerable populations. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to promoting the well-being and safety of all individuals within Malaysian communities.
